The new Mulsanne Speed offers a combination of extraordinary luxury and limitless power that only a Bentley can deliver. But for the serious driver, it offers something more. It offers more control. More performance. More overtly dynamic styling, inside and out. And in the eyes of many, a more purposeful appearance, its black steel details adding to its powerful road presence. The new, wide front grille houses dark tint matrix brightware, a theme carried through to the Bentley ‘B’ wing vents and even the new dark tint lamps. As you enter the car, polished stainless steel treadplates greet you, engraved with the word, ‘Speed’. Drilled alloy sports foot pedals and a knurled sports gear lever bring Bentley’s racing heritage to mind, as you sit in its newly designed diamond quilted seats. But ultimately, the Mulsanne Speed is all about performance. A re-engineered 6¾ litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine propels it to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds (100 km/h in 4.9 seconds) and a phenomenal top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h), the gear changes almost imperceptible, thanks to its 8-speed automatic transmission.
The new Mulsanne Speed is much more than just a powerhouse. It is a car for those who prefer to take the wheel themselves; those who insist on being in control. The word ‘Speed’ is engraved on the treadplates, greeting you on entry with an indication of the performance to come. With tighter suspension, a performance-tuned powertrain and styling cues that evoke almost a century of excellence in motorsport, the new Mulsanne Speed delivers a more thrilling driving experience than any comparable car, without compromising on comfort. Brightware is the name Bentley gives to the polished chrome exterior details that adorn most of the company’s cars. But on the new Mulsanne Speed, bright gives way to darkness, the polished dark tint details lending this Mulsanne a decidedly meaner appearance. The new Speed wing vents and the matrix grille that sits behind the new vertical vanes are recipients of this finish, as are the headlamps and the Bentley ‘B’ rear lamps – the latter being, for many fellow road users, their most enduring memory of the new Mulsanne Speed.
Like every Bentley, the new Mulsanne Speed exterior is designed around a single sweep known in the design team as the powerline – a single sharp edge that emerges elegantly from the curve of the front wheel arch, running the length of the car and into the rear haunch. Consider it a clear hint at the power that lies beneath the bonnet.
Elsewhere, there are further clues to the car’s phenomenal performance, from the solid stainless steel Speed badges adorning each fender to a new 21” wheel, each one machined individually from a forged aluminium alloy blank.
The details that mark out the new Mulsanne Speed are as subtle as they are sleekly designed. But look closely and its added sense of purpose is unmistakably apparent. All external brightware has been treated with a dark tint – including the Bentley matrix that sits behind the new vertical vanes of its wide front grille. Lower grilles, too, are darker and wider – for an altogether more imposing face.
The new Mulsanne Speed is built around a hand-assembled 6¾ litre twin-turbocharged V8 engine. Designed for unrivalled power and torque, it produces a monstrous 530 bhp (395 kW / 537 PS) at 4,000 rpm and 1,100 Nm (811 Ib.ft) at just 1,750 rpm. The result is a top speed of 190 mph (305 km/h) and acceleration from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.8 seconds (0 to 100 km/h in 4.9 seconds).
The new Mulsanne Speed brings greater control, tighter handling and added exhilaration to the experience of driving a Mulsanne. Its Drive Dynamics Control system offers four driver-selectable settings for the suspension and power steering, including a Sport mode that physically lowers the ride height, increasing grip, body control and an overall sense of connection to the road without compromising ride comfort.
The front seat infotainment system features a new 8” touch screen display and a faster, more intuitive user interface. Complemented by the new My Bentley and Smart Remote mobile apps, it is compatible with Android Auto, Apple Car Play and Mirrorlink.
Traditional craftsmanship meets digital technology in the new Bentley Theatre Rear Seat Entertainment system exclusive to Mulsanne. At the touch of a button, twin 10.4” touch screen tablets can be deployed electrically from within the backs of the front seats, providing access to many of the car’s systems for rear seat passengers, including journey and vehicle data, games, locally-stored digital music and disks in the DVD changer. Thanks to the in-car WiFi, streaming of cloud-based media, video calling, internet radio and office functions are also available. If you wish, the tablets can easily be removed from the car and function independently.
