Brief History of the Lexus European Flyfishing Championships
The Lexus European Flyfishing Championships are the biggest fishing events in Europe and possibly even the World. There are two separate events – the Individual Championships and the Team Championships for teams of 6 anglers.
John Horsey is the Lexus Championship Manager and has a wealth of experience at International level, being England’s highest capped International fly angler.
Both events are fished from boats on major reservoirs and are known universally as the “friendly flyfishing championships”, where relatively inexperienced anglers can spend a day in the boat with a World Champion.
The Individual Champion wins a brand new Lexus RX450h Hybrid SUV supplied by co sponsors the Sytner Group. The car is the Champion’s to use for the coming year and there are also superb tackle and holiday prizes at all stages of the competition supplied by top tackle companies Hardy & Greys, Sportfish and Anglers World Holidays.
The object is to enter a Regional Heat and progress through to the Grand Final. Individuals may enter as many times as they wish and at any of the 20 Regional Heats across the UK. The Championships operate a unique “Wild Card” system of qualification whereby the person who catches the biggest fish at any Heat automatically goes through to the Grand Final. This effectively means that you could finish in last place overall, but by catching the largest fish on the day, you are still a winner.
The Championships attract anglers of mixed abilities from all over the UK, plus France, Belgium, Norway, Czech Republic, Italy, Australia, Canada and the USA. This year’s Individual Final will be held at Chew Valley Lake near Bristol and the Team Final at Rutland Water near Leicester.
