New Maserati

Beat the VED increase on April 1st

What's happening?

On 1st April 2017, the way in which VED (Vehicle Excise Duty) is changing. Currently, the VED rates for vehicles are calculted based on the size of the engine, the CO2 emissions and the type of fuel the vehicle uses, depending on when the vehicle was first registered. When the VED changes occur, all new cars registered after 1st April 2017 will have their VED rate calculated differently.

Any vehicle that is registered on or after 1st April 2017 will be taxed on a first-year rate. This is based upon the CO2 emissions band that is applicable to that vehicle, and there will then be a standard fee of £140 per year for the following years. If your vehicle has a list price of over £40,000, there will be an additional premium of £310 per year for the following five years. So, in years 2-5 all vehicles with a list price of £40,000 or more will pay £450 per year, after which it will revert to the £140 per annum standard rate, for year six and thereafter.

How will this affect me?

If you purchase any new car with a list price of over £40,000 then it will be subject to the new rates. This is the manufacturer's recommended retail price, plus any optional extras. There will be a three-tier system for classifying how vehicles are subjected to the VED rates:

  • Zero Emissions vehicles under £40,000 are exempt.
  • Petrol and diesel engines with a list price of under £40,000 that emit 1g/km CO2 and above will pay a VED rate of £140 per year from year 2.
  • Petrol and diesel engines with a list price of over £40,000 will be subject to a VED rate of £450 per year for years 2-5. After 5 years, this will then revert to the standard rate of £140 per annum.

This does not affect any vehicle registered before 1st April 2017 and also does not apply to commercial vehicles, HGVs or motorcycles.

What can I do to avoid the increase?

It's simple. Purchase a new car and as long as it is registered before 1st April 2017 then you'll pay the current VED rates for the lifetime of the vehicle.

No increases. The potential savings across the Maserati range are significant.
