McLaren 650S Coupe

The McLaren 650S Coupe

It all started with a blank piece of paper and our engineers wondering how they could make the perfect sportscar.
60 mph in under 3 seconds, a top speed of 207mph, 650PS - You feel the thrill of the drive, sense the connection to the road and hear the twin-turbo V8 roar as it hits peak rpm.

Innovative Technology, Unmatched Performance

Carbon Fibre Monocell

A huge part of the reason the McLaren 650S feels so intimately connected to the road is the carbon fibre MonoCell at its core. It's strong, it's light, it's safe, it doesn't flex when you finally dare to take Flugplatz flat. It makes the McLaren 650S feel fantastic.

We pioneered the use of carbon fibre in Formula 1 and in production road cars. For over 30 years, every car we have made has had carbon fibre at its core.

It took 4,000 hours to make each carbon fibre chassis on the McLaren F1. Twenty years of innovation later, it takes just four hours to produce the MonoCell that makes the McLaren 650S feel so special.

Weighing just 75kg, the MonoCell is lighter, stronger and stiffer than comparable steel or aluminium designs, so it's safer and gives the McLaren 650S the best possible base for thrilling dynamics.

The lightweight carbon fibre MonoCell ensures the McLaren 650S has the handling of a race-bred supercar. It's future-proof too: carbon fibre does not degrade like metal, so the 650S will feel as agile and be just as safe for decades to come.

The 650S Coupé and the 650S Spider are built on identical carbon MonoCells. So they provide the same torsional rigidity, structural integrity and performance characteristics.

Born out of our Formula 1 expertise, the integral strength of the carbon fibre MonoCell provides exceptional levels of safety for you and your passenger.

The low front accelerates airflow below the car, creating downforce that maximises traction and cornering ability, giving you extra confidence to push to the limit.

The harder you drive the McLaren 650S, the more it sticks itself to the road. Part of the reason lies with the Formula 1-inspired flat underside and rear diffuser, which provide significant levels of downforce.

Side Vents

Heat is the enemy of performance, and the harder you drive, the hotter things get. The side intakes force air into the cooling radiators keeping heat to a minimum for maximum performance.

Air Brake

Press hard on the carbon ceramic brakes and the Airbrake deploys for even mightier stopping power. The Airbrake can also be partially deployed to act as a rear wing, increasing rear downforce by 20%, while a Drag Reduction System lowers it to maximise straight-line performance.

Built Around You

Every millimetre of the McLaren 650s's Carbon Black Alcantra interior has been meticulously optimised for maximum driving pleasure and unparalleled comfort.

Formula 1-inspired gearshift

The McLaren 650S features a seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox for super-fast gearshifts and peerless efficiency. You can control those gearshifts via a Formula 1-inspired rocker shift paddle mounted on the steering wheel. That means gearshifts are always at your fingertips, whether you're flat-out through Eau Rouge or trickling through Monaco's Grand Hotel Hairpin. A new feature allows for stacked shifts when the driver pulls the rocker shift multiple times, delivering the change directly to the desired gear. Or just select Auto and let the car do the work.

Panoramic View

Not only does the McLaren 650S's styling take your breath away, its exterior and interior have also been designed to keep your eyes on the road. The dashboard is laid out simply and logically, the steering wheel uncluttered. The low cowl – another benefit of the powerful V8 being positioned behind you – allows you to scan the road without obstruction, while the tops of the arches are positioned directly above the front wheels and are clearly visible from the driver's seat. This means you can position the McLaren 650S perfectly, whether you're clipping an apex at the Nürburgring or manoeuvring into a parking space.

Race-crafted Steering Wheel

Grip the tactile, small-diameter steering wheel and your fingertips' sense of connection to the McLaren 650S echoes that of our racing drivers in a Formula 1™ cockpit – the shape, the grip and the feel were all inspired by the steering wheels in our race cars. There are no buttons or switches to diminish the purity of interaction between man and machine.

Active Dynamic Panel (ADP)

How the suspension connects you to the road, how quickly the gearshifts react to your inputs, even the volume of the 3.8-litre twin-turbo V8. ADP's Normal, Sport and Track modes allow you to tailor the McLaren 650S to your ideal driving preferences. Refined cruiser one minute, track-day thrill-seeker the next.

Design without compromise

Every time you approach your McLaren 650S, you'll feel the same tingle of excitement as when you first set eyes on it. Every panel, every surface, every detail has been painstakingly designed to take your breath away and enhance the thrill of the drive.

Active Airbrake

Now available in carbon fibre, the active Airbrake gives you total confidence to exploit the McLaren 650S's astounding performance and dynamics. Brake heavily above 95kph and the McLaren 650S's active Airbrake instantly deploys, meaning you can stop faster and brake even later on the racetrack. It also offsets front-end pitch and increases downforce under hard braking to maximise stability.

In Sport and Track modes, the Airbrake will automatically adjust to create more downforce at speed and offers additional stability when you lift the throttle. In Aero mode, you'll even feel the same thrill as our racing drivers when DRS (Drag Reduction System) activates, lowering the Airbrake to provide those last few mph as you race towards the finish line.

A lightweight piston raises the airbrake to it's initial setting of 32 degrees, giving you the extra downforce.

Airflow channelled over the rear of the car forces the airbrake to extend to 69 degrees.

You'll have the confidence to brake even later because the airbrake reduces stopping distances by more than 20 metres.
