North East Mercedes-Benz Lovers Celebrate In Style...
125 years after Carl Benz submitted application number 37435 for a patent for a “vehicle with a gas engine drive system”; around 300 car enthusiasts from across the North East came together last weekend to hold a very special birthday party for the worlds first automobile. Celebrating in style at the Mercedes Benz of Newcastle showroom, the crowd of motorbuffs were treated to a unique display of more than 40 classic Mercedes cars whose proud owners are members of the North East’s very own branch of the Mercedes Benz club.

Cars ranging from the oldest and rarest model the 1951, 170v Mercedes which is one of only 20 left in the UK; to the newest addition to the brand, the new Mercedes SLK convertible. Guests from throughout the region were treated to a fun-packed day hosted by the Newcastle dealership with something for all the family including an extra special barbeque serving traditional Swabian cuisine cooked by local company ‘Love Food Limited’. Swabia is the region in Germany where the motor car originated and is home to the ‘Geordie’s of Germany’; Mercedes of Newcastle Dealer principal Jeremy Simpson explains more “The Swabian’s are thought of as a the German Geordie’s because like the Geordie’s they have their own unique accent and dialect and their own individual Swabian culture; they are also famous for being great engineers while our region is famous for railways and shipbuilding theirs is famous for cars and trucks. We thought is was only right to include a piece of Geordie Germany to our 125th Anniversary celebrations here in Newcastle” |
Guests were treated to tours of the dealership (see below image) and were even able to put their driving to the test on the giant Scalextric and racing car simulator. Mercedes Benz technical experts also helped the classic car owners by sharing their knowledge and experience by finding rare parts and spares to keep their beloved classic cars ticking over for more years to come. _______________________________________________
Paul Jobling from the official Mercedes-Benz Club which has around 400 members in the North East commented: “It’s great to see so many people enjoying the cars and celebrating 125 years of the motorcar. It’s a chance for our North East members to showcase their classic Mercedes cars and it’s inspiring that the dealership have taken time out to mark the occasion.” Kevin Thompson has worked for Mercedes-Benz for 22 years and said: “Everyone at the dealership is proud to be involved in such a momentous occasion. The event was fun and a great way to celebrate. Some of our guests were so impressed by our vehicles they decided to buy one on the day!”
9 year-old Harvey Simpson had a great day at the dealership - “It was really fun, I liked looking at all the old cars but my best bit was racing my brother on the Scalextric track.” Newcastle’s event is the latest in a string of worldwide celebrations for the Mercedes 125th Anniversary to commemorate ‘125 years of innovation’ and the dealership are continuing their celebration by displaying a ‘concourse’ prize winning 1970’s 280SL Pagoda in their showroom during the month of October. Famous Mercedes Pagoda owners have included motoring legends David Coulthard and Stirling Moss, supermodel Kate Moss, actor John Travolta, singer John Lennon and film icon Audrey Hepburn and many more... ________________________________________________ For more information on this event or backgroundinformation on Mercedes-Benz, please contact; Jeremy Simpson Dealer Principal & Market Area Sales Director Mercedes-Benz and Smart of Newcastle AMG Performance Centre Phone: 0191 226 7444
