Bonfire night is often distressing for dogs. Follow our tips below to help keep them calm.

Almost 50% of dog owners report that their dogs show signs of distress with the effect of loud noises such as fireworks and thunderstorms. To prevent the impact of this on their wellbeing there are a few different things you can do to help them manage.

Signs your dog is scared of fireworks:

  • Whining and barking

  • Shaking

  • Drooling

  • Pacing

  • Being clingy or seeking reassurance

  • Hiding

  • Put off their food

  • Trying to escape

Before fireworks:

  • Note the behaviours your dog usually displays and behaviours they have displayed in the past during fireworks.

  • Contact your vet if you know your dog is scared of fireworks.

  • Research local events and check with your neighbours.

  • Plan to adapt your usual routine and walk your dog whilst it is light.

  • Arrange for someone familiar to be with your dog.

  • Ensure they are inside before any fireworks are likely to start.

During fireworks:

  • Create a safe space for your dog.

  • Do not force them outside.

  • Drown out the sound of fireworks with music or TV.

  • If they seek reassurance, comfort them.

  • Secure your house so they can't escape.
