SEAT’s much-heralded, all new SUV, the Ateca, has scooped another major award with AutoExpress handing it the crown of Crossover of the Year 2016. SEAT’s first-ever new mid-size SUV beat off competition from the likes of the Renault Kadjar, Ford Kuga and Nissan Qashqai.
The Ateca shares the same platform as SEAT’s highly popular Leon hatchback but with a much taller roofline offers masses of headroom. Add in an impressive boot space of 510 litres (485 litres for 4x4 models, which is more than the Kadjar and Qashqai), and the availability of a 1.0 litre engine and Ateca provides a compelling offering from less than £18,000 – a good £2,000 less than the Ford Kuga and £500 less than the Qashqai.
Unique entry-level spec
Spec is also high on the list of positives for the Ateca with entry-level S trim providing five-inch media touchscreen, USB connectivity air conditioning, leather steering wheel, plus a rather unqiue split-folding rear seats with a reclining function.
Most appealing is the mid-spec SE model, which get dual-zone climate control, cruise control, electrically adjustable, heated and folding door mirrors and rear parking sensors on top of all the kit from S models.
The top spec 187bhp Ateca models sprint from 0-62mph in 8.5 seconds. If that’s not enough, there is also the possibility of more performance-based Cupra models being added to the range at a later date.
There will be 4 levels of spec & five engines available: three diesels and two petrols, with power ranging up to 187bhp. There will also be automatic gearbox and four-wheel drive versions available.
Diesel engines are ikely to be the most popular options. 1.6-litre 114bhp diesel plus 148bhp or 187bhp 2.0-litre engine TDI choices are offered, with the latter also offered in four-wheel drive mode. For lower mileage motorists, there's also a 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine which pushes out 148bhp, which could be the pick of the range.
The Ateca lands in our showrooms in September, but there will be a SNEAK PREVIEW day in our North Wales showroom on Thursday 21st July and in Huddersfield on 8th August.
Ride quality, handling, technology and spec all contributed to AutoExpress awarding the Ateca the title of Crossover of the Year 2016. The SUV is praised for “punchy engines”, highly adjustable seat position and is “very convincing from behind the wheel”.
All this doesn’t include its stunning good looks and genuine affordability with the Ateca S 1.0 TSI available from only £239 deposit and £29 a month at 4.9% APR. There’s also an additional £500 discount if you test drive the Ateca before the 30th September.
