The Volkswagen Polo, fresh from last year’s facelift and this year’s even more efficient engine options has once again surged ahead of its competitors, claiming the AutoExpress award for Supermini of the Year 2016.
Previously accused of being too ‘safe’, Volkswagen have added extra trim levels to the range including a sporty new R-Line this year and the brand new Beats model. To add to the style, there’s a class leading choice of engines, 11 in total, from the new 1.0-litre petrol engine through to the 1.8 TSI powered 192ps GTI model.
AutoExpress, however, favoured the Volkswagen Polo BlueMotion 5 door at £15,635. The new ultra-economical BlueMotion has ditched diesel for a punchy 94bhp three-cylinder turbocharged engine that discharges only 94g/km of CO2. This Polo gives you Bluetooth connectivity for telephone and music, touchscreen infotainment and cruise control as standard.
Refinement in a class of noisy cars
AutoExpress were not alone in their praise. What Car? said, “The Polo is a genuinely classy and impressively refined supermini,” and mentioned that lower spec models make the most sense. They added, “Refinement is one of the VW’s strengths in a class of typically quite noisy cars. It’s interior, too, feels solidly put together and classier than any rival.” What Car? also offset the seemingly ‘high’ purchase prices with very strong resale values.
The Polo’s reputation as a safe, small car that is practical and thoroughly enjoyable to drive seems to stay intact with the Telegraph’s review as well. “The VW Polo proves you can have efficient engines, lots of equipment and excellent build quality in a small package,” adding that it looks and feels like a smaller version of the Golf, with “a range of advanced safety features that you rarely see on this class of car.”
With a big range of trim and engines, including two 1.4 TDI variants for those covering a lot of miles, the Polo is likely to be popular again this quarter. Add in the one year’s insurance and deposit contribution of up to £1,400 (on a Solutions PCP) included across much of the range, and the Polo looks like a winning offer – find out more here.
