Mercedes-Benz of Weston-super-Mare support TT rider
Mercedes-Benz of Weston-super-Mare puts Wayne on track for TT debut
Mercedes-Benz of Weston-super-Mare is helping local motorcycle racer Wayne Axon to fulfil his dream of competing in the Isle of Man TT next week with support and expertise both on and off the world famous road circuit.
The Bridge Road Retailer has sponsored the 45-year-old amateur rider to compete in the Lightweight Series on Friday 8th June and one of its technicians, Tony Sherriff, has taken two weeks’ leave to help Wayne prepare his Suzuki 650 SV for the numerous practice sessions and the big race itself.
The duo are already on the island, where Wayne achieved 29th position in his first practice on the 37-mile circuit and clocked an average speed time of 103mph. Sixty six competitors are battling it out to qualify for the three-lap race next Friday.
Having only begun racing three years ago, Wayne’s participation in the TT is mightily impressive. His entry follows his performances last season when he finished third on the island in the Manx GP and in the North Gloucestershire Mini Twins championship.
“My parents brought me to the TT as a child in 1970 and it’s been my dream to compete here with the top road racers,” said Wayne, who works as a technician at Worle Community School. “I want to claim a top 25 place but I will be thrilled to get a finisher’s medal and automatic entry for next year as completing the race will be difficult in itself at the first time of asking.
“I wrote to more than 40 local companies for sponsorship, so I’m extremely grateful to Mercedes-Benz of Weston-super-Mare for offering to support me,” he added. “I’m also thankful to Tony, who I’ve known for many years, for giving up his holiday as his technical assistance will be invaluable.”
Steve Harvey, Mercedes-Benz of Weston-super-Mare’s After Sales Manager, added: “Mercedes-Benz is steeped in motor racing history but this must be the first time that the brand has been associated with racing on two wheels instead of four. We wish Wayne every success on the Isle of Man and a safe return.”
