A hybrid vehicle is any car that is driven by two power sources. In the case of BMW's Plug-in Hybrid models, this is achieved by the use of a small electric engine working in tandem with a petrol engine. The advantage to hybrid cars over conventional cars is that the same level of performance is delivered with lower running costs and reduced emissions. At the same time, hybrid cars offer the same excellent range and convenience of a model with a traditional engine.
The BMW Plug-in Hybrid range takes the best of BMW’s combustion engines, using renowned EfficientDynamics, and marries it to modern battery technology and an electric motor. The result is a BMW with two power sources, but more so, it’s a totally responsive drive.
When it comes to range, BMW’s lithium-ion batteries vary depending on the nature and driving style of the driver. However, with BMW EfficientDynamics and different driving modes, such as eDrive, you’ll always get the optimum combination of responsiveness and fuel consumption.
On short trips up to 41 miles, the BMW Plug-in Hybrid models are powered completely by their electric engines; on longer trips, fuel consumption varies depending on model type and total distance travelled.
As well as being systemically connected from inside the vehicle, ConnectedDrive offers the ability to keep connected to your Plug-in Hyrbid via your smartphone. Various functions include operating your vehicle remotely, including locking and unlocking the car, displaying vehicle location, current status of the vehicle e.g. the range, charge status. Hybrid-specific functions are also visible, ensuring you that you always have an overview of the fuel consumption and efficiency figures.
Along with the individual driver's style affecting the energy consumption this can also be influenced by one of three driving modes that iPerformance offers.
AUTO eDRIVE mode uses the intelligence of the EfficientDynamics system within the BMW to determine the most efficient combination or electric and engine, taking into account the battery charge status and the driving speed.
MAX eDRIVE mode enables the driver to enjoy zero emissions, solely using electric driving. The combustion engine will switch on automatically if the acceleration potential has been exhausted or at high speeds.
SAVE BATTERY/ BATTERY CONTROL - If the battery charging status is low, in order for the driver to save the battery capacity for electric driving only, SAVE BATTERY/BATTERY CONTROL mode will enable it to be charged by the engine or allow the charging status to be maintained.
