McLaren 600LT

evo Car of the Year 2018 and Supercar of the Year 2018

evo Car of The Year is a prestigious title for car manufacturers, which is why when the McLaren 720S took the crown in 2017, it was a huge congratulations for all at McLaren having the British track-based supercars recognized for the quality and technology applied to the model range.

This year, McLaren beat competitors by the likes of Ferrari and Porsche and took the top spot for the second year in a row, with the fourth 'Longtail' edition, the 600LT. The introduction of the McLaren 600LT marked both the beginning of the next chapter in the ‘Longtail’ story and the setting of a new benchmark for super-sportscar performance. Built to excel in equal measure on track and road, the 600LT is the fastest, most powerful and most track-focused – yet road legal – McLaren Sports Series yet created.

Inspired by the renowned McLaren 675LT models and their iconic ‘Longtail’ McLaren F1 GTR racing predecessor, the new addition to the LT family has all the physical hallmarks of a true McLaren ‘Longtail’, including an extended front splitter, lengthened rear diffuser, fixed rear wing and elongated silhouette – in this case by 74mm compared to a McLaren 570S Coupé. The unique bodywork optimises aerodynamic performance, working in conjunction with a flat carbon fibre floor to produce 100kg of downforce at 250km/h (155mph) that generates the increased grip and greater high-speed stability that is a significant contributor to the 600LT’s excellence on a track.

"The McLaren 600LT is our 2018 Car of the Year. It’s the second eCoty victory in a row for the British manufacturer from Woking, and provides yet more evidence that the firm has rightfully earned its place among the true supercar-making greats. The ingredients it uses often look familiar, but with every iteration the execution improves yet further.

As one of the three powerhouses in our test group, the 600LT differed from the Ferrari and Porsche by recognising the value of true engagement, even with close to 600bhp on tap. In fact, that power output was strangely immaterial, having little to do with the car’s final placing. Instead it was the McLaren’s deep-seated connection to the person behind the wheel that proved to be the ultimate clincher. Agile, connected, dramatic, but exploitable and always on-side, the 600LT is McLaren coming of age – and this is only just the beginning. The establishment are no longer on notice. They’re being left behind."
