After their announcement earlier this year that the Bentayga luxury SUV would compete at the 2018 Pikes Peak International hill climb, Bentley have now unveiled the car that they will be competing with.
In case you missed the news; Bentley recently announced that they would be tackling the illustrious Colorado hill climb, on 24th June 2018, with their sights set not only on completing the infamous course but also securing their Bentayga W12 the record for ‘fastest production SUV to complete Pikes Peak’.
Further to their initial announcement, Bentley Motorsport have now unveiled the very special Bentayga that they will be competing with – Bentayga RS. Strictly limited to just one example, this Bentayga has been specifically designed to allow its pilot – two-time Pikes Peak champion, Rhys Millen – the ability to maintain an average of over 60mph while tackling the 156-corner course.
Differing only due to a custom-made exhaust system from Akrapovic, the Bentayga RS is powered by an unmodified 6.0-litre bi-turbo W12 that is the same as the production Bentayga W12; meaning that it benefits from 600bhp and 664lb ft. Unlike the production version, however, Bentayga RS has undergone a serious course of weight reduction in order to give it an even greater shot at beating the 12:35.61 record that currently stands.
Removing everything from the rear seats to the soundproofing, Bentley Motorsport have managed to make Bentayga RS a total of 300kg lighter than the production Bentayga. Ensuring that the perilous hill climb is completed in the safest way possible, Bentayga RS is fitted with a lightweight roll cage, automatic fire extinguisher and an FIA approved racing bucket seat.
The driver tasked with taking to the helm of Bentayga RS is seasoned Pikes Peak veteran Rhys Millen. The son of a five time Pikes Peak victor (Rod Millen), Rhys’ family have long been associated with the hill climb; with Rhys boasting two Pikes Peak victories of his own. Talking of their hill climb attempt, Rhys said:
“The opportunity to race with Bentley at Pikes Peak is one that I couldn’t pass up. I visited the Bentley factory in Crewe, England last month and was amazed at the level of skill that goes in to handcrafting these cars. I also had the chance to drive the race-prepared car for the first time and was blown away by the performance that’s already available. I’m really looking forward to preparing for the race, competing on the mountain with Bentley and hopefully claiming a new SUV record.”
Bentley will attempt to claim the fastest production SUV record on the 24th June 2018, when the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb competition gets into full swing. We’ll be sure to bring you all of the updates as and when they happen.
