Unveiled on a livestream earlier today, the new Bentley EXP 100 GT is a zero emissions concept car that wears exquisite Bentley design of the future, aims to raise awareness of climate change and showcases innovation and sustainability. That’s a lot to live up to, but it definitely manages it.
Said to be the future of Grand Touring, the EXP 100 GT is capable of both autonomous and enjoyable manual driving, with artificial intelligence technology that creates a level of luxury that has never been seen in any previous luxury vehicle. That incredible level of luxury comes thanks to something called the ‘Bentley Personal Assistant’. Built into the very fibre of the vehicle, the AI can not only control the EXP 100 GT’s systems but also aims to monitor the comfort and well-being of all occupants; continually tailoring the car to suit their exact preferences. Clever.
The EXP 100 GT is so clever that it can slowly learn about its occupants, eventually even being able to anticipate what their preferences will be if road surface conditions change, light conditions change or the weather changes. This is something that Bentley say they want all of their future models to be able to do, stating that in the future, cars like this will be for more than just simple A to B, they’ll be for “extraordinary and emotional human experiences”.
The EXP 100 GT is said to be Bentley’s view of luxury in 2035, meaning that they’ve even thought of clever technologies that can harness and adapt the environment around the car. For example, Bentley say that the EXP 100 GT can harness and redirect natural light, can redirect natural airflow and uses sustainable trim materials in very creative ways.
Capable of sending between 600-1,000kW (800-1,340hp) to all four wheels, the Bentley EXP 100 GT is powered by an all-electric powertrain known as ‘Next Generation Traction Drive’. Consisting of four 150-250kW electric motors, that generate a peak torque of over 1,100lb ft, the drivetrain offers an advanced torque vectoring system and is said to be a realistic view of what we can expect from future electric Bentley models.
Combined with a lightweight body made from aluminium and carbon fibre, the drivetrain would be capable of firing the EXP 100 GT from 0-62mph in just 2.5 seconds and then on to a top speed of 186mph.
Now, the important bit for an electric grand tourer – range. Bentley say that they have designed the EXP 100 GT with future battery development in mind, meaning that the battery setup would be capable of supplying a 435 mile range from a single charge and would charge to 80% in just 15 minutes, thanks to the battery’s energy density.
Styling wise, the Bentley EXP 100 GT is certainly striking. Featuring a pair of two-metre wide doors that lift outwards and upwards, the exterior is a demonstration of what Bentley believe their design language will be in 2035; similar to the sophisticated aesthetic we’re used to but more futuristic. Unlike a lot of concept cars, the EXP 100 GT is actually very believable.
Due to the removal of a conventional engine, the proportions have changed somewhat, with the nose being shorter, the windscreen further forwards and the cabin larger. Despite this, the EXP 100 GT remains either a four-seater or a two-seater.
The latter depends entirely on whether the EXP 100 GT is in autonomous or normal drive mode, modifying the interior into three different configurations: two-seater, three-seater or four-seater. Cleverly, the seats are ‘adaptable biometric seats’ that can anticipate adjustments that might make them more comfortable for the person seated on them.
Looking back at the Bentley Personal Assistant we mentioned earlier, occupants can hand gesture in such a way that it causes the PA to change the EXP 100 GT into one of five different comfort modes: Enhance (harvests characteristics of the outside environment), Cocoon (extreme privacy mode), Capture (records experiences), Relive (replays the aforementioned experiences) and Customise.
There are too many amazing things on the EXP 100 GT for us to mention in this one article alone, so we may have to revisit it in another article later on. What we can say, however, is that the Bentley EXP 100 GT is an incredible concept car and it really showcases where Bentley are headed in the future.
