Sponsored by Shell Helix Oils, Pirelli Tyres and CitNOW, the final stage of the Elite Technician Challenge 2019 came to its conclusion yesterday. A tense competition that tested the abilities of all of our finalists, it was an incredible day for all involved.
The practical final was the final hurdle that stood between our finalists and the sensational prizes on offer: the title ‘Elite Technician’ and a once-in-a-lifetime trip to attend the Detroit Grand Prix. Hosted by Penske Racing, the latter will see our winners spending five days in Detroit, with the chance to go behind the scenes at one of the biggest events on the motorsport calendar. Only one Elite Technician could be crowned in each of the categories, so the stakes were certainly high.
Following the theory portion of the final, that was held last month and tested our Technician's knowledge, the practical final has been designed to test the real life diagnostic skills of our finalists.
First up was the main part of the practical final - diagnosing faults on a real life vehicle. Lasting just 1 hour and 15 minutes it tasked our finalists with finding a host of faults on a real life car from their brand. In order to ensure the practical test is fair, each brand had provided three identical cars for their respective Technicians.
Once time expired on the main practical exam, each of the finalists then had just 15 minutes to create a CitNOW walk-around video that outlined all of the faults they had found on their car. This is something that each of our Technicians will have performed in their day-to-day role and, in the event of a tie-break situation (like last year), could have been the defining asset that helped crown our winners.
Once the competition had come to its close, all of the assets, CitNOW videos and theory scores were put in the hands of professional, impartial, judges from the Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI). Ladies and Gentleman, we're delighted to give you your Elite Technicians for 2019.
Created to demonstrate the ongoing commitment that we have to all of our colleagues, this year marked the third year of the hugely successful competition. Piloted in 2017 with just three of our prestige franchises, the competition has now grown to feature ten franchises, a multi-brand category and an apprentice only category. Speaking of the industry leading competition, Darren Edwards, Sytner Group Chief Executive Officer, said:
"Our highly skilled Technicians make a huge impact on our business and it's really important that we hire the best. We feel that the Elite Technician Challenge demonstrates our commitment to our Technicians and shows how important it is to help all Sytner Group colleagues to grow and progress. Thank you to everyone that helps make this competition so special and congratulations to all of our finalists".
As mentioned by Darren, we’re very proud to say that we operate a strong ‘one team ethos’ and always seek to nurture and reward talent within the Group.
