Now in its third year, the highly successful Sytner Elite Technician Challenge, sponsored by Shell Helix Motor Oils, Pirelli and CitNOW has returned for 2019. After fierce competition in the first stages, it’s once again time for the finalists to take on the theory portion of the final.
With just under 500 entrants taking part, the competition has now been slimmed down to just three finalists from each of the 12 participating manufacturer partners. All are competing to be named as an ‘Elite Technician’ and to win an once-in-a-lifetime trip to the Detroit Grand Prix, hosted by Penske.
New for 2019, we’ve introduced an additional two new categories - Apprentice and Multi-brand. Designed to ensure all of our Technician colleagues can apply for the competition working within all of our brands and also giving our Apprentices the opportunity to take part, the new categories are a very welcome addition to the competition.
Split into two halves, the first portion of the final will see our 36 finalists take on an Institute of the Motor Industry (IMI) accredited theory test that has been designed to test our Technicians on everything from day-to-day servicing of a vehicle to unique vehicle problem solving questions.
The second half of the final, which is set to take place next month, will see our finalists go head-to-head in the practical test. Against the clock, the finalists will be asked to identify a number of faults on a real life vehicle from their respective brand.
After time is called on the practical challenge on the day, the finalists will then have to create a personal video presentation, with an app from new sponsor CitNOW, which outlines and explains all of the faults that they found on their vehicle – just like they would when diagnosing and reporting back to a customer.
The theory portion of the Sytner Elite Technician Challenge 2019 kicks off today and will see two days of intense competition descend upon Sytner Group Head Office. Only one Technician from each brand can be crowned Elite Technician, so the competition is well and truly under way!
