Every year, the Frankfurt Motor Show delivers a platform at which the world's most loved manufacturers can unveil and display the future of the automotive world. Always proving to be one of the biggest spectacles on the automotive calendar, this year's show saw everything from a road car with Formula One performance to multiple demonstrations of the all-electric cars we can expect to see on the road in the future. Taking just a sample of the incredible things on show, here are our highlights.
ALPINA D5 S
Based on the stunning new 5-Series, the new ALPINA D5 S features four-wheel drive as standard and a 3-litre bi-turbo straight six diesel engine that produces (in UK spec) 322bhp and 516lb ft torque. Available in either Saloon or Touring guise, this promises to be another fantastic diesel ALPINA.
Audi RS4 Avant
0-62mph in 4.1 seconds, 450bhp and peak torque of 600nm - what more could you ask for? Combining the practicality of Avant, aggressive styling and incredible performance figures, the new RS4 Avant really is a triple threat. To quote Audi Sport - "it blends immense power output with superlative everyday utility".
Audi Aicon Concept
Demonstrating innovative Audi technology, Audi Aicon benefits from technologies that work to relieve the stress felt by the driver on every journey. Among these systems, next generation machine learning and automated driving have made an appearance. Another fascinating look into the future from Audi.
Audi R8 V10 RWS
An all-new rear wheel drive variant of the already fantastic Audi R8. Limited to just 999 examples, this new R8 features the same 540PS mid-mounted V10 as the four-wheel drive version but this time feeds all of the power to the rear wheels and utilises a control system that allows controlled drifts.
Bentley Continental GT
The entirely new Bentley Continental GT is here. Demonstrating exquisite Bentley design, this new car combines quintessential Bentley luxury with state-of-the-art driving technology. Power comes from a completely new 6.0-litre W12 that accelerates the car to 60mph in just 3.6 seconds.
BMW Z4 Concept
Originally unveiled at Pebble Beach, the long awaited look into the future of the BMW Z4 is finally here. Adopting the fantastic silhouette of the last production Z4, sharp lines and BMW's quintessential striking concept aesthetic are the order of the day. Definitely one to look forward to.
Along with the facelifted BMW i3 (with increased range), BMW have unveiled a new performance focused i3 named 'i3s'. Powered by a 184hp electric motor, i3s produces 270nm of torque and completes 0-62mph in just 6.9 seconds. More aggressive styling completes the package.
Expected to debut in 2018, the new BMW X7 combines luxury, space and power. Striking exterior design is coupled with an interior that benefits from future technologies and a huge panoramic roof to make the new X7 feel spacious and special. Oh, it's also capable of zero emission travel thanks to a plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
The new BMW M5 is finally upon us. Scheduled for launch in February 2018, this sixth generation M5 uses a 4.4 litre V8 M TwinPower Turbo and a clever (rear-wheel biased) all-wheel drive system to get from 0-62mph in just 3.4 seconds and 124mph in just 11.1 seconds.
The replacement for the fantastic California T, Portofino is a stunning convertible GT car that combines both Ferrari performance and luxury travel. Powered by a turbocharged V8 engine, Portofino produces 600cv and reaches 60mph from a standstill in 3.5 seconds.
E-Pace is Jaguar's very first compact SUV. Despite its compact size, E-Pace combines lightweight design, Jaguar aesthetics and a clever layout to ensure great performance and practicality. As you'd expect, Jaguar luxury and innovative technologies are heavily integrated on the interior.
Land Rover Discovery SVX
After already creating the audacious F-Type SVR and track-friendly Range Rover SVR, JLR Special Vehicle Operations have turned their attention to the Land Rover Discovery. Named Discovery SVX, this V8 Discovery boasts both extreme power and Land Rover's unbeatable off-road ability.
Mercedes-AMG Project One
Months of teasers and speculation have all led to this - the official unveiling of Project One. Where we all expected a car with performance similar to a Formula One car, Mercedes-AMG have given us a car that they say will actually match an F1 car. Definitely one to read more about.
MINI John Cooper Works GP Concept
The most outrageous MINI ever? No back seats, a stripped down cabin with wrap around roll cage, extreme aerodynamic design - this is the all-new John Cooper Works GP Concept. If this is what MINI have planned for the next generation JCW GP, then the future definitely looks bright.
Debuting the concept car at this year's Frankfurt Motor Show, MINI have confirmed that they will produce an all-electric MINI from 2019. Joining a host of BMW Group all-electric and hybrid models, MINI E is set to be an important part of BMW Group's future electric car plans.
SEAT Leon Cupra R
Limited to just 799 examples, the long-awaited Leon Cupra R arrives in 2018. Featuring a 2.0-litre 310ps engine, a six-speed manual gearbox and front-wheel drive, it once again promises to be one of the funnest hot hatchbacks out there.
smart Electric Drive
smart's range of fun little cars is now available with fully electric drive! Quick charging and control through the fantastic 'smart cross control' app mean that the all-electric smart range promises zero emission fun with enhanced control over the car's range and functions.
Volkswagen's bold new SUV is here. Strong exterior design promotes the dynamic nature of this new compact SUV whilst an interior full of innovative technology ensures that the driver and passengers are always entertained and in the know. Optional 4MOTION is available to allow extra torque when tackling uphills.
Volkswagen I.D. Buzz
After receiving a large number of letters and emails from customers following the I.D. Buzz concept' reveal at the start of the year, Volkswagen have now confirmed that they will put a version of I.D. Buzz into production. Inspired by the much loved Kombi Microbus, this one is very much looked forward to.
