Looking ahead to a world where autonomous cars have all but completely taken over, Jaguar have introduced their FUTURE-TYPE Concept – a Jaguar that you summon when you need it.
Like many futuristic cars, FUTURE-TYPE Concept is only available through the use of a subscription service. Over the last year, this is something that we’ve actually heard quite a lot, for example: Polestar’s cars will be introduced entirely through a scheme where you can change the car that you’re driving whenever you would like. Unlike services like Polestar’s, however, Jaguar’s on-demand service club doesn’t see you paying membership to own a car; instead it would allow you to summon the FUTURE-TYPE Concept whenever you need it.
In lieu of a car, joining Jaguar’s club sees you purchase nothing more than their innovative new steering wheel – think of it as a very special membership card. Named ‘Sayer’ after the creator of the E-type, this new steering wheel is more like Amazon’s ALEXA than a traditional steering wheel and can do everything from summoning the FUTURE-TYPE Concept itself to ordering shopping, playing music and even making dinner arrangements.
Members of Jaguar’s on-demand club will have the choice of owning the FUTURE-TYPE Concept entirely or sharing it with multiple people in their community. Should you need the car, you simply ask Sayer to organise it for you – say you have a meeting at 8am tomorrow morning; Sayer will figure out your usual schedule (when you wake up, etc) and then ensure that the car arrives with you at the perfect time. It’s almost like having your own personal assistant.
The FUTURE-TYPE Concept car itself would feature fully autonomous driving capabilities and would operate using the very latest ‘co-operative driving’ technologies – these are special programs that connect the car to all other cars, subsequently preventing accidents and allowing for better efficiency.
Whilst FUTURE-TYPE Concept takes on the task of navigating your route, you get to sit back and enjoy the 2+1 social seating that faces inwards to allow face-to-face conversation. You can also keep up-to-date with friends, family and work through FUTURE-TYPE’s ‘orbits’ technology. This system organises all of the relevant information from each circle into groups; think Facebook but with all of the updates organised into different concise sections.
If you don’t feel like you want to be chauffeured around, you can choose to drive the FUTURE-TYPE Concept in ‘Assisted driving’ mode. Still monitoring the road around you, this mode allows you to drive the car using your Sayer steering wheel.
Regardless of mode, power would come from an all-electric drivetrain that, thanks to this being a car that is ‘summoned’ from a central space, would always have a fully charged battery.
Speaking of the FUTURE-TYPE Concept Concept, Jaguar Director of Design Ian Callum commented:
“FUTURE-TYPE CONCEPT offers an insight into the potential for driving and car ownership in the future. It’s part of our vision for how a luxury car brand could continue to be desirable, in a more digital and autonomous age. Our FUTURE-TYPE CONCEPT is an advanced research project looking at how we can ensure an on-demand Jaguar will appeal to customers in 2040 and beyond".
