Back in September 2019, we brought you a story that Lamborghini had created their first hybrid supercar – the Lamborghini Sián. Now, just under a year later, Lamborghini have unveiled a roadster variant and we can’t get enough.
Strictly limited to just 19 examples (there will be 63 coupes), the Sián Roadster takes everything that made the coupe great and then removes the roof for extra thrills. Lamborghini say that the design gained its inspiration from past Lamborghini legends such as the Veneno, Aventador, Countach and Terzo Millenio. We can definitely see it.
Underneath that incredible design, the futuristic hardware remains pretty much the same as the Sián coupe, meaning that power comes from Lamborghini’s iconic 6.5-litre V12 – boosted to 774bhp – with an additional 33bhp coming from the company’s first hybrid system. The result of all that power is a 0-62mph sprint of under 2.8 seconds and a top speed of 217mph (and a lot of glorious V12 noise).
What sets the Sián’s hybrid system apart from anything we’ve seen before is its use of supercapacitors instead of standard lithium-ion batteries. The almost Star Wars sounding technology was first introduced on the outrageous Terzo Millennio concept car and has the potential to store up to 100% more energy, charge much faster and accept more charge than standard batteries.
Recharging energy is taken care of by regenerative braking, with the new fast charging technology allowing a full charge to be achieved every time the car brakes, which is pretty astounding. Lamborghini have also incorporated the hybrid system into the gearbox, allowing it to take care of low-speed manoeuvres instead of the V12.
