First, there was the legendary elongated McLaren F1 GTR Longtail and then there was the sensational McLaren 675LT; however you look at it, the Longtail moniker has always been attached to only the most aerodynamic McLaren sports cars. Now, following in the footsteps of its predecessors, there’s an all-new McLaren Longtail.
This time, it’s called the McLaren 600LT and it finds its roots alongside the likes of the 570S, 570GT and 540C within McLaren’s Sports Series. That said, this all-new Longtail is unlike anything that we’ve seen within the Sports Series before – this is an uncompromised, stripped out and highly focused super sports car. As you can rather immediately see from its appearance, the 600LT has undertaken a fairly significant overhaul when it comes to aerodynamics and performance honed design, but that is just the beginning.
Ensuring extreme abilities, a new aggressive splitter can be found dominating the front end, whilst an outrageously pointy diffuser, a new wing and dramatic upwards facing exhausts sit proudly at the rear. Everything inbetween these elements has been either lightened or, if not needed, removed entirely; the result is a 96kg weight saving when compared to the 570S Coupe.
The Longtail name has only ever been used with McLaren models that chase aerodynamic gain – hence the elongated tail from which the name derives. Following suit, the all-new McLaren 600LT has grown in length by 74mm. Despite seeming like a small change, this elongation of the silhouette helps to increase downforce and subsequently handling.
Complementing all of the aerodynamic and weight-saving efforts, McLaren have also increased the power of the 600LT’s 3.8-litre bi-turbo V8 beating heart. Coming courtesy of an uprated cooling system and reduced back pressure through that new, shorter, exhaust system, the new McLaren 600LT boasts 600PS (592bhp) and 620NM (457lb ft) of torque. Weighing in at just 1,247kg (lightest dry weight), the McLaren 600LT’s increased power sees it benefit from an astonishing power-to-weight ratio of 481PS/tonne.
All of the power is then fed solely to the rear wheels through a seven-speed dual clutch gearbox and delivered to the tarmac through bespoke Pirelli P Zero Trofeo R tyres that have been designed specifically with a focus on track work and driver engagement.
We can’t help but imagine just how capable the 600LT would be hot lapping the world’s best racing circuits – we’re jealous of the lucky few that’ll get to experience it!
Unfortunately, McLaren are yet to reveal the exact results that come courtesy of these new Longtail elements, so we can’t give you any numbers for the 600LT’s sprint to 60mph or its top speed. Whilst we wait for the numbers to appear however (the 600LT’s official launch comes at the Goodwood Festival of Speed in a couple of weeks), it’s worth bearing in mind that the McLaren 570S Coupe is already good for 0-60mph in just 3.4 seconds.
