Way back in 2018, we were excited to bring you news that the sensational Formula One powered Mercedes-AMG ONE had finally been spotted testing at a secret test track in England. Now, two years on, Mercedes-AMG have confirmed that they’re starting the next phase in testing – performance testing.
It’s fantastic news from a project that has been facing some rather large challenges over the last couple of years - as you’d expect, taking the engine straight out of a Formula One car and placing it into a road car was never going to be a small task. It would seem, however, that Mercedes-AMG have now squashed those problems and we couldn’t be more excited.
The new phase of testing sees several pre-production models practising fast laps at Mercedes-AMG’s proving ground and technology centre in Immendingen, Germany. These seven test cars are the first examples of the ONE that have been authorised to use the powerplant’s full output of over 1,000hp. We’d love to know the times that they’re capable of.
The aim of the latest testing phase is to continue the fine tuning of the car, with the engineers and test drivers refining things like engine response and furthering development of the car’s active aerodynamics. With the ONE aiming to bring a new level of hypercar performance, the way that the car handles through corners is just as important as how quickly it gets down the straights.
As a reminder, the Mercedes-AMG ONE is a road car that uses pretty much the same 1.6-litre turbocharged V6 engine as the Mercedes-AMG W07 F1 car that dominated F1 back in 2016. Utilising the same hybrid tech as the F1 car, it uses MGU-H and MGU-K (heat and kinetic energy harvesting) to create additional efficiency and to boost the power available. Unlike the F1 car, the ONE will be able to run on electric power alone for short periods of time.
What’s next for the ONE once this stage of testing is complete? The infamous North Loop of the Nürburgring. That’s right, of all the incredible racing car based hypercars that we’re excited to see released soon, it seems that the first to visit the Nürburgring will be the Mercedes-AMG ONE! Watch this space.
