BMW i unveil facelifted BMW i3 and all-new performance variant, BMW i3s
BMW Press Club have released images of the the new BMW i3 and i3s which will be premiered this September at the International Motor Show; after becoming the best-selling electric car in the premium compact segment it’s time for a refresh! The latest BMW i3 and i3s offer emission-free driving and efficient energy use whilst the i3 is still maintaining power with a maximum output of 170hp and a top speed of 93mph, with the car reaching 0 to 62mph in 7.3 and is available with range-extender engine as an optional upgrade.
The range extender allows the car’s overall range in everyday use by 93 miles, increasing it from around 112 miles to a maximum of 205 miles***. The all-electric range of the new BMW i3 with range extender is 140 – 146 miles* as per NEDC and 118 – 124 miles** as per WLTP. The BMW i3s is powered by a high-performance 184hp electric motor that generates peak torque of 270Nm. This model consists of sports suspension, 20 inch light alloy wheels and is capable of reaching zero to 62mph in 6.9 seconds before achieving maximum speed of 99mph making it slightly quicker than the standard i3; this version is also available with a range extender.
The exterior still has the trademark BMW i Black Belt running from the bonnet over the roof to the car’s rear end is now complemented by A-pillars and roof lines that also sport a black finish. There are also additional paint finishes including Melbourne Red metallic and Imperial Blue metallic as well as the non-metallic shades Capparis White and Fluid Black. The interior of the cars consists of carbon fibre-reinforced plastic as well as doors that open in opposite direction allowing the passengers to enjoy a spacious and futuristic journey.
There are three additional specifications including The Loft, Lodge and Suite as alternatives to the standard Atelier version. The Lodge interior design option includes a new covering for the seat surfaces in Solaric Brown that combines natural leather tanned using an olive leaf extract with a wool-based textile material. The i3 and i3s feature recycled plastics, renewable raw materials, natural fibres and open-pored, unbleached eucalyptus wood. More than 80 per cent of the surfaces visible to the passengers are made from recycled materials or renewable resources making it a car of the future with sustainable materials.
