On the 8th November 2019 a team of 6 from Sytner North Wales Audi head to the battlefields of the Somme in France to raise money for Blind Veterans UK. Their aim is to walk a 20.6KM loop between Thiepval Memorial, Mametz Wood Memorial, and Lochnagar Crater Memorial returning to Thiepval whilst 2 members of the team are blindfolded.
The chosen route will involve retracing the steps made by troops in the Great War where many thousands lost their lives. Working in pairs they will complete their walk with one member of the pair wearing a blindfold using the Sighted Guide Technique – leading each other from the battle fields in much the same way the very first blind veterans would have been led. Blind Veterans UK have kindly offered to give the guys at our North Wales Audi group some training in preparation.
The team will be leaving North Wales Audi HQ in a vehicle promoting companies who have sponsored the challenge, along with decaled Poppies on each panel as the chosen dates for the challenge are 8th-11th November 2019.
They will travel over to Calais via ferry to Hardecourt-Aux-Bois in France where they'll be staying. An early rise on Saturday 9th November will see the challenge commence from the majestic Thiepval Memorial.
On Remembrance Sunday the team will travel to Ypres in Belgium to pay their respects and lay a wreath at the Menin Gate, a war memorial dedicated to the 54,395 British and Commonwealth soldiers who were killed in the Ypres Salient of World War 1 and whose graves are unknown.
The trip will conclude on Armistice Day where they will observe the 2 minutes silence.
The team will consist of:
- Shaian Sanati (North Wales Audi Head of Business)
- Ex Royal Navy Petty Officer, Matt Losing (North Wales Audi Preparation Centre Manager)
- Ex 3rd Battalion Royal Welch Fusilier Corporal, Jack Allred (Bodyshop Technician)
- Jordan Irving (Photographer and Videographer)
- Adam Irving (Business Manager)
- Johnny Baxter (VW Commercial Head of Business)
With Jack and Matt being ex-service men, Blind Veterans UK is a charity close to our hearts and with Sytner Audi having a centre in Llandudno, close to home. All proceeds from the challenge will be used to support the work at this centre, with the team aiming to raise a minimum of £2k for Blind Veterans UK.
