President Donald Trump has today announced that Roger Penske is to be awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for his success in motorsport and services to the country.
The award, which is the highest civilian honour in the USA, recognises “an especially meritorious contribution to the security or national interests of the United States, world peace, cultural or other significant public or private endeavours."
During his announcement, President Trump said:
“Penske is a great gentleman who has won 18 Indianapolis 500s”
"He's very deserving, he's a great gentleman. I've known him a long time and a very brilliant guy,"
Roger ‘The Captain’ Penske celebrated several years of success as a racing driver before becoming a highly successful entrepreneur and race team owner.
Penske Racing have enjoyed 18 Indy 500 wins, the latest occurring earlier this year; after which the team were invited to the White House by the President.
In a statement on Penske Racing’s Twitter account, Roger Penske commented:
“It is truly an honour to be recognised by President Trump and awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. I am humbled by the President’s acknowledgement of our achievements in business, in motorsports and in our community.”
On behalf of my wife Kathy (Penske), our family and our nearly 65,000 team members worldwide, it will be my privilege to accept this prestigious award.”
Penske acquired the Sytner Group in 2002 after a period of rapid expansion. Under the Penske umbrella, the Sytner Group has enjoyed continued growth, with recent acquisitions including both Carshop and The Car People.
We’re sure we speak for everyone at the Sytner Group when we say that we are proud and privileged to have such an inspirational leader as Roger as our Chairman and, that we are all hugely proud to be part of Team Penske. Congratulations once again on this fantastic achievement.
