Back in 2017, Volvo made a promise that they’d offer an electrified variant of every model in their range by the end of 2019. True to their word, Volvo just completed their electrified range by unveiling an all-new XC40 plug-in hybrid at the Frankfurt Motor Show. It’s a big day for Volvo.
Officially named the Volvo XC40 T5 Twin Engine PHEV, power comes from a 180bhp 1.5-litre three-cylinder engine and an 82bhp electric motor. Combined, the powertrain makes 262bhp which is fed to the front-wheels through a seven-speed twin-clutch automatic gearbox.
Utilising a 10.7kWh lithium-ion battery, the Volvo XC40 PHEV is capable of running on nothing but electricity for around 29 miles and, combined with the petrol engine, offers fuel economy of up to 141.1mpg.
Fast charging capability – through the optional fast charging cable – means that the battery can be completely recharged in as little as 2.5hours, whilst a three-pin plug will get you a full charge in 3.5 to 6 hours.
Granting control over the powertrain, there are multiple different driving modes. The first three – Hybrid, Power and Pure - utilise the hybrid system in slightly different ways, maximising efficiency or power; the latter meaning a claimed 0-62mph sprint of 7.3seconds. The final two modes – Individual and Offroad – can be used to customise the XC40 PHEV or give you better traction on low-grip surfaces.
By completing their electrified range with the new XC40 PHEV, Volvo have now sealed themselves as the first automotive manufacturer to offer a plug-in hybrid variant of every model in their range. Speaking of their achievement Kristian Elvefors, Volvo Car UK’s Managing Director, said:
"The introduction of the T5 Twin Engine brings our electrification programme to the heart of our model line-up, demonstrating our commitment to giving all our customers the best possible choice when it comes to powertrains that are both better for the environment and also practical for their lifestyles and driving requirements.”
Order books for the new Volvo XC40 hybrid are now open and the first UK deliveries are scheduled for February 2020. If you’d like to learn more about Volvo’s new hybrid or you’d like to enquire, contact our fantastic colleagues at Tollbar Volvo Warwick below!
