At this year’s What Car? Car of the Year Awards 2020, various models from Sytner Group franchises were celebrated for everything from Best Coupe SUV to the Best Safety Award. Take a look through the below to see who won what!
Best Coupe SUV – Range Rover Velar D180 S
The Best Coupe SUV award is given to an SUV that can do a bit of everything, demonstrating striking looks that don’t compromise practicality, a classy and high quality interior and great performance characteristics.
When they tested the latest Range Rover Velar, What Car? deemed it worthy of the coveted five star rating, mentioning in their verdict that the Velar is a stylish, refined and seriously appealing coupe SUV.

Best Small Car – Volkswagen Polo 1.0 TSI 95 SE
In today’s world of chasing efficiency and low running costs, the award for Best Small Car seems to be even more desired than previous years. When deciding the winner of this category, What Car? looked for a car that is spacious enough for four adults, built with quality materials, fun to drive, has a decent-sized boot and low running costs.
The Volkswagen Polo has long been a staple in the world of small hatchbacks, so it’s not surprising that it’s an award winning car! In their review of the Polo, What Car? concluded that it leads its class in almost every way.
Best Family Car – SKODA Scala 1.0 TSI 115 SE
The Best Family Car award is given to a car that is perfect for family life; meaning that it has plenty of practical space, low running costs, a comfortable ride, lots of equipment, is constantly reliable and is manufactured to a high standard.
When they reviewed the SKODA Scala, What Car? gave it a five star rating, mentioning that it ticks every box you could ever think of … even some that more expensive cars fail to address. Certainly one to take a look at.

Best Family SUV – Range Rover Evoque D180 S
The award for Best Family SUV could be considered as one of the most competitive awards at the What Car? Car of the Year awards. It’s designed to celebrate an SUV that has a comfortable ride, lots of infotainment features, space for child seats, practicality and fuel efficiency.
What Car? described the Range Rover Evoque as a five star car, noting that it is good to drive, really posh inside and practical by the standards of the class. They also mentioned that it depreciates slowly, meaning a better return when you come to sell.

Best Luxury SUV – Audi Q7 50 TDI S Line
In the world of luxury vehicles, the SUV category is one that has grown substantially in the last few years. To win the award, a car had to be beautiful inside and out, have enough space for five or seven people, great performance and efficiency and composed handling.
What Car? concluded that the Audi Q7 is an outstanding SUV that offers the perfect blend of comfort, cruising manners and agility.

Best Sports SUV – Porsche Macan S
As the name of the award would suggest, the winner of the Best Sports SUV award had to demonstrate strong performance, agile handling and precise steering, whilst also offering reasonable ride comfort and a practical high quality interior.
In their review of the Porsche Macan – in which they rated it five stars – What Car? noted how the Macan is fast, fun, luxurious, refined and comfortable. A true all-rounder. You should definitely try one.

Best Estate Car – SKODA Superb Estate 2.0 TDI 150 SE Technology
In order to be successful in the Best Estate Car category, a car had to be incredibly practical with loads of interior space, comfort for all occupants, offer a choice of strong engines and low running costs.
What Car? determined that their winner was the SKODA Superb Estate, a car that they’d previously given five stars and called a “spankingly good all-round estate car” in their review.

Best Convertible – Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cab S560 Grand Edition
There’s nothing better than spending time in an open-top car; that’s why the Best Convertible award focused on cars that offer wind-in-the-hair excitement. The winner also had to feature a fast roof, comfortable seating for four, little wind buffeting and a quiet drive regardless of whether the roof is up or down.
When you consider all of the above, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class Cab certainly seems like a very worthy winner. What Car? agree, not only giving the S-Class Cab the win but also remarking that it is unrivalled when it comes to effortless drop-top motoring.
Best Coupe – Audi TT 40 TFSI Sport
As you’d imagine, the Best Coupe award celebrates sportiness. As such, What Car?’s criteria included strong performance, a balance of ride and handling, excellent build quality, a sophisticated interior and decent practicality for the class.
The Audi TT is a staple in the world of sports cars, so it’s no surprise that it has won multiple What Car? awards over the years. In their review, they stated that the latest version ticked every box required and more.

Best Plug-in Hybrid – BMW 3 Series 330e M Sport
With the world moving evermore towards electrification, this award is slowly becoming one of the most important at the awards. To win in this category, a car must have a usefully long electric-only range, great all-round efficiency, cheap company car tax and a smooth switch between petrol and electric powertrains.
This year, the Best Plug-in Hybrid award was picked up by the BMW 3 Series 330e; a car described by What Car? as near-flawless … which explains why the 3 Series picked up three different awards.
Best Luxury Car – BMW 5 Series 520d MHT SE
As with the Best Luxury SUV award, this one is all about elegance; with the winner needing to offer a great ride and silent driving, power, efficiency, great rear space, an incredibly high quality interior, amazing build quality and a luxurious options list.
What Car? determined that the car to tick all of those boxes is the BMW 5 Series 520d MHT SE. Another five star car, What Car? said that the BMW 5 Series is a brilliant and classy luxury saloon that’s more of a complete package than any of its rivals.

Best Executive Car – BMW 3 Series 330e M Sport
To be successful in the Best Executive Car category, cars would need to offer a great standard specification, comfort and a substantial infotainment system whilst also being capable of effortless long-distance driving and low running costs.
The second of the awards that went to the BMW 3 Series 330e M Sport, What Car? echoed their comments from the Best Plug-in Hybrid category. We’re sure you’ll agree, the 3 Series is a worthy winner.

Best Pick-up – Volkswagen Amarok 3.0 V6 TDI 204 4Motion Trendline
The Best Pick-up award celebrates pick-up trucks that have the ability to go anywhere and are also work-ready, robust, commanding and capable of heavyweight towing.
Awarded five stars when they reviewed it, What Car? determined that the Volkswagen Amarok is a brilliant pick-up that is practical and great to drive whilst also being easily the most comfortable car in the class.

Reader Award – Land Rover Defender
The reader award is an award that is decided by What Car? readers through a vote. Offered a 12 car shortlist, readers were asked to vote for the car that they thought would be the most exciting of 2020.
They determined that the all-new Land Rover Defender ticked that box. It would appear that What Car? agree, determining the Land Rover Defender to be worthy of the iconic Defender when they drove it back in November. We’re quite excited for this one.

Best Safety Award – BMW 3 Series
In order to win the Best Safety Award, a car had to have been awarded a five-star Euro NCAP rating with high scores in all categories, standard-fit crash avoidance systems (such as automatic emergency braking) and driver assistance systems like adaptive cruise control with lane support.
Rounding off the awards that were given to the BMW 3 Series at the What Car? Car of the Year awards, the Best Safety Award is an incredibly important one. With a proven track record, we’re sure you’ll agree that the 3 Series is a very worthy winner.
