The brand new version of the up! is due to hit showrooms this week. Volkswagen’s most successful ever city car has had a facelift with a new turbo-charged 1.0 TSI engine along with a new derivative which offer the driver a more personal experience.
The new 90ps engine actually creates as much power as the first ever Golf GTI, but offers fuel consumption of just 4.4 litres per 100 kilometres. What Car? is delighted with the new engine saying “the turbocharger boosts power and adds much more pulling power from low speeds.”
With prices starting from £9,000, the new model still comes with the familiar Take up!, Move up! and High up! trim levels but also now comes with a brand new up! beats edition which unashamedly targets the younger driver with an exciting audio specification. The new derivative comes with 300 W 8-channel amplifier with digital signal processor, subwoofer and seven premium loudspeakers as well as some added style in the form of unique alloy wheels and new interior pack options.
The appeal of one year’s free insurance won’t be lost on the younger audience either, although buyers do have to be aged 19 or over and it’s conditional on buying through a Personal Contract Plan and sharing driving data through a telematics app (not necessarily a bad thing – helps monitor driving styles!).
The most enduring thing about the up! is still the space. The car still manages to offer bags of room for something that’s relatively small – just one of the reasons the motoring press still love the car – note the praise from AutoExpress:
“The Volkswagen up! proved just how good a city car can be when it arrived in 2011, and it’s still a top choice today. This updated model is better looking and has a great new 1.0-litre turbo engine under the bonnet, while still being great to drive, practical and efficient.”
