An exciting final practical test sees Chris Caton crowned as Volkswagen Division's 2018 Elite Technician!

Sponsored by Shell Helix Oils and Pirelli tyres, the final stage of the competition took place at Stoneleigh Park in a fantastic event that truly tested the practical ability of all 30 of our highly skilled finalists. After a highly competitive final practical stage that saw two competitors go to a tie-break, we are excited to announce the winners of the Elite Technician Challenge 2018.

With one lucky winner being picked from each of the brands involved, the stakes were most certainly high – everyone wanted to be taking home that ticket to the Detroit Grand Prix and the coveted title ‘Elite Technician’. Hosted by Penske, this once-in-a-lifetime trip to Detroit will see our winners getting up close and behind the scenes of one of the biggest events of the motorsport calendar!

Chris Caton from Stafford Volkswagen is certainly passionate about his career and his love of motorsport.

All that stood in their way was a practical exam that was designed to test their diagnostic skills. With a time limit of just 1 hour and 15 minutes, all of the technicians were tasked with finding a host of faults from which their test vehicle was suffering; ensuring fairness, the three technicians from each brand had identical vehicles from their respective manufacturer.

Once time was up (something that seemed to happen unbelievably quickly) our finalists then had 15 minutes to complete a personal video presentation that outlined all of the faults that they had found - just like they would in the dealership environment.

Having 30 of the best technicians all competing in one place was always going to make for a close competition and it actually came down to this personal presentation video to solve a tie within one of the brands!

We are incredibly proud of all of the 30 finalists; to quote Darren Edwards (Sytner Group CEO) they should all be immensely proud to have got that far”. All of the finalists fought hard throughout the competition and continually showed the skills and dedication that makes them all Elite Technicians in their own right.

Demonstrating the pride and commitment that we have towards all of our team members, the Elite Technician Challenge was originally piloted in 2017 with just three of the prestigious brands that we represent. After another highly successful competition this year, we are very excited to hopefully continue this growth and hold the industry leading initiative again in 2019. Speaking of the competition, Darren Edwards – Chief Executive Officer, Sytner Group – said:

“Last month Sytner were named as both the best large Dealer Group and overall Retailer of the Year at the AM awards – these are accolades that I am extremely proud of, and it is initiatives such as this that ensures that we continue to develop and grow as a company. Initiatives such as this truly set us apart from our competition”

At Sytner Group we’re very proud to say that we operate a strong ‘one team ethos’ and always seek to nurture and reward talent within the Group. If you are interested in joining the Sytner Group and possibly taking part in future competitions like the Elite Technician Challenge, you can learn more about careers here.
