Volkswagen unveil ID.3

Volkswagen's All-Electric ID.3 has Finally been Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show

Over the last few weeks, you’ll have undoubtedly seen the various records that Volkswagen have been setting with their incredible ID.R all-electric racing car. Well, the reason for the records was to drum up excitement and suspense for this, the first production member of Volkswagen’s new ID family. Ladies and Gents, the Volkswagen ID.3 is finally here.

Unveiled at the Frankfurt Motor Show, the Volkswagen ID.3 is being praised as the brand’s most important car since the Golf; in fact, it’s so important that the name ‘ID 3’ is actually a nod from Volkswagen that they are beginning the “third major chapter of the brand after the Beetle and Golf”.

Anyway, the ID 3. Based on the new MEB platform – a flexible bespoke electric platform that will form the basis of 27 EVs across VWG – Volkswagen say that the ID.3 is an electric car for all, mainly thanks to a starting price (for a range of this size) that sits much lower than the competition.

How have Volkswagen done that? Well, they haven’t gone out of their way to create an electric car that wants to live in 2082; they’ve created the next generation of affordable Volkswagen … it just happens to be powered by electricity. That’s a very good thing.

Thanks to the MEB platform and minimal overhangs, Volkswagen have managed to create an incredibly spacious interior whilst still keeping the ID.3’s dimensions compact. The result is a Golf sized vehicle (there are mm’s of difference in it) that can comfortably and easily fit five adults with more than enough leg and headroom.

In keeping with the futuristic nature of the drivetrain, Volkswagen have fitted the interior with a large, dashboard mounted, 10-inch screen that faces towards the driver and various haptic-feedback buttons that sit flush with the car’s surfaces; each of these are operated by touch as oppose to actual pressing.

Assisting with control of the car, you also have intelligent natural voice control and App Connect, the latter easily connecting your phone to the car.

All driving details – speed, range, etc – are now shown to the driver on a new, very clear, digital screen behind the steering wheel. Taking this to the next level, there’s also an optional augmented reality head-up display that projects information onto the windscreen and is capable of showing overlaid graphics when using the satnav. We’re hoping to bring you more on this soon.

Now, the important bits: range and such. At launch the ID.3 will be available with three different battery size options; a base version with a 45kWh battery and a range of 205miles, a 58kWh version with a range of 260miles and a 77kWh version with a range of 341 miles. All three versions offer 229lb ft of torque but, where the base version offers 148bhp, the latter two both offer 201bhp.

Along with a bigger range, the mid-level versions will offer a charging capacity of 100kW and promise to charge to 161 miles of range in just 30 minutes. The base model ID.3 will come as standard with a charging capacity of 50kW with the option of 100kW and the highest variant in the range will offer a charging capacity of 125kW.

Regardless of variant, the electric motor has been placed on the rear axle, making the Volkswagen ID.3 a rear-wheel drive hatchback. Volkswagen say that placing the motor at the rear gives the ID.3 better weight distribution and subsequently better handling – we, like many, have always loved the way that the Volkswagen Golf drives, so we’re hoping for a similar feel here.

The Volkswagen ID.3 is an important car not only for Volkswagen but also the ongoing electric car revolution, as it signifies a shift towards affordable and practical electric cars. The Volkswagen ID.3 will start appearing in dealerships next year and will be followed closely by a production version of the ID Crozz SUV.
