On Sunday 22nd April, Volkswagen revealed their new spectacular all-electric racing car, which will take on the Pikes Peak International Hill Climb on June 24th in Colorado.
This is Volkswagen’s first fully-electric racing car, I.D. R, representing Volkswagen's electric technology of the future and their sporting credentials. Volkswagen wanted to achieve the ideal balance of energy, capacity and weight, starting a new era of Motorsport. Testing at European racetracks such as Alès and the Col St. Pierre hill climb will be carried out, followed by a tyre trial with Michelin.
Volkswagen previously entered with a twin-engine Golf in 1987 but did not achieve victory. The record currently stands at 8:57.118 minutes, set in 2016 by New Zealand’s Rhys Millen.
They have kept the weight of the I.D. R under 2,500 lbs and have fitted two electric motors capable of 680 horsepower and 479 lb-ft of torque, giving it an impressive time of 0-60 in 2.25 seconds.
With the "Race to the Clouds", the most famous mountain race in the world, starting at 2,862 metres and finishing at 4,302 metres above sea level and with only one attempt to set the record, it is set to be a remarkable, exhilarating race.
