All of our staff are knowledgeable and enthusiastic; sharing the aim of always getting it right first time and making each and every interaction special by always going the extra mile.

History of the Sytner Group

In 1968, Frank Sytner and his older brother Alan (previously the owner of the world famous Cavern Club in Liverpool) opened their first car dealership in Nottingham. Little did they know that this would form the start of the Sytner Group – a company that would grow to encompass 19 of the world's most desirable car manufacturers in over 100 dealerships across the UK.

Just two years later in 1970 the business were appointed BMW dealers in Nottingham and at the same time Frank began his venture into the world of motorsport. Starting in Formula Ford 1600 and later moving into Clubmans Formula Ford 2000, Frank enjoyed a successful 10 year Formula motorsport career before moving into the British Touring Car Championship (BTCC). There he proved himself as a formidable racing driver and earned the nickname 'Fearless' due to his incredibly competitive and uncompromising racing style.

Frank's BTCC career started with him racing a Rover 3500S for Team Sanyo Racing and after a season of mixed results he naturally gravitated towards BMW and started to race for Grace International Racing. Solely driving BMW's from then on, Frank achieved his first overall BTCC win in 1988 and became British Touring Car Champion that year – a title he would earn again in 1990.

It was after these two BTCC wins that Frank decided to focus his energy on expanding the BMW business which he and Alan had continued to operate in Nottingham. Putting his notorious racing energy and competitiveness to work outside of racing, the expansion began in 1993 with the acquisition of a BMW dealership in Leicester quickly followed by a third BMW operation in Sheffield.

After spending many years working exclusively with BMW, the decision was made to diversify the Group to represent other prestige marques and by 1997 the dealership count had reached double figures and included brands such as Ferrari, Audi, Mercedes-Benz, Land Rover and Porsche.

Later that year the company floated on the Stock Market and became Sytner Group PLC in a move which enabled it to finance its continuing growth across the UK.

The Penske Era

By 2002 the company had become one of the largest Dealership Groups in the UK when it came to the notice of Roger Penske, the prominent US businessman and motorsports competitor.

Penske was on the lookout to diversify his American based business – where he operated the 2 nd largest Dealer Group – into Europe and given their shared passion for motorsports, it was perhaps inevitable that the two companies would join forces.

Being part of the Penske business has allowed Sytner to continue to grow in scale as well as investing in its people and facilities. Now operating more than 100 sites in the UK and with a growing presence in key European markets in Italy, Germany and Spain, the Sytner Group has become the UK's largest Prestige Motor Dealer employing almost 7000 people.

Present Day

All Penske businesses recognise that unparalleled customer service can only be achieved by attracting, motivating and retaining the very best team members. With this in mind, Sytner put their employees at the heart of everything they do and are proud to have achieved a top five position in the ‘Sunday Times Best Big Companies to Work For’ for six consecutive years.

In 2015 the Group achieved its best result to date finishing second overall and also being awarded a coveted ‘Three Star’ Award for the third year running. This award has only ever been presented to a very small number of ‘big companies’ in the fourteen years of the competition.

Whilst aiming to be the leading retailer of prestige cars in the UK, we are proud to still retain a strong family feel throughout our business. Striving to build upon our past success, Sytner Group endeavours to offer an uncompromised customer experience.
