You’ll need to pass the Motorcycle Theory Test before your training commences and provide the certificate number to the training centre so your practical test can be booked.

You will be taken from a complete novice to a fully-qualified rider within a week. You’ll train on a BMW Motorrad bike and we suggest training over the full seven days if you’ve never ridden before.

Yes the Rookie to Rider scheme is available on a wide variety of bikes in the BMW Motorrad range. The monthly payments will change depending on the model chosen, and your chosen retailer will be able to create a quote for you.

*If you hold an A2 licence you still have plenty of motorcycles to choose from, all of which can be restricted and are suitable for the license you hold. These are the G 310 R, G 310 GS, F 750 GS (Restricted), F850 GS (Restricted), F 900 R (Restricted), F 900 XR (Restricted) and F 850 GSA (Restricted).

You’ll need to pass the Motorcycle Theory Test before you can get started.

Once you start training, you’ll complete the CBT (Compulsory Basic Training) which will be carried out at the training centre with your instructor.

The full motorcycle test comprises of Module 1 which is carried out at a test centre and shows that you are able to control the motorcycle. This is usually taken around halfway through the week.

Once you’ve passed your Module 1, you can then take Module 2 which is on the public roads where you’ll be followed by an examiner. This is always taken at the end of the week.

CBT stands for Compulsory Basic Training. Most learner motorcycle and moped riders must take CBT. You then have to pass your full motorcycle test within 2 years or you’ll have to take your CBT again.

After you’ve completed your CBT, you can ride a moped or a motorbike up to 125cc and with a power output of up to 11kW on the road. You must use L plates (L or D plates in Wales) until you pass your full motorcycle test.

The CBT comprises of 5 elements:

  • Introduction and eyesight check

  • Practical on-site training

  • Practical on-site riding

  • Practical on-road training

  • Practical on-road riding (Must last at least 2 hours)

You’ll move from one element to the next when your trainer is happy you’ve:

  • Learnt the theory

  • Shown the practical skills to a safe basic level

Yes, there are age limits around which licence you can apply for. Please see below for a full outline on these restrictions.

I am aged 19 – 24:

You’ll complete your A2 Licence. This comprises of your Theory Test, CBT, Module 1, and Module 2. Once you have obtained your A2 licence, any bike except G 310 R and G 310 GS will need to be restricted.

After two years or once you turn 24 (whichever is soonest), you’ll be eligible for a discounted upgrade to the A licence. You’ll be required to revisit your BMW training centre and retake your Module 1 and Module 2. Once you have completed your A licence, you’re then able to ride a motorcycle of any engine capacity.

I am aged 24 or over:

​You’ll be able to complete your A licence. This comprises of your Theory Test, CBT, Module 1 and Module 2. These tests will be taken on a motorcycle of at least 595cc and 50kw with a minimum curb weight of 180kg. Once you have completed your A Licence, you’re then able to ride a motorcycle of any engine capacity.

At 19 you can get an A2 licence which allows you to ride a motorcycle with power up to 46.6 bhp which is usually means up to 500cc engines size. Please note a restricted version of a more powerful motorcycle can be ridden on an A2 licence. Below is a list of the BMW Motorcycles available on your ‘A2 Licence’:

  • G 310 GS

  • G 310 R

  • F 750 GS (Restricted)

  • F 850 GS (Restricted)

  • F 850 GSA (Restricted)

  • F 900 R (Restricted)

  • F 900 XR (Restricted)

After two years or once you turn 24 (whichever is soonest), you’ll be eligible for a discounted upgrade to the A licence with your local BMW training centre.

Once you start your training, if you decide it’s not for you, the £650 contribution is non-refundable as this contributes to the cost of your rider training. You have the right to withdraw from your finance agreement within 14 days, but charges may be incurred. In the event that you wish to execute your right to withdraw, you should speak with your chosen Sytner BMW Motorrad Retailer to see what support can be offered, or with BMW Group Financial Services on 0370 50 50 150.

You must ensure that you have and maintain comprehensive motor insurance on the motorcycle for the duration of your finance agreement.

Upon completion of the seven-day Direct Access course you are entitled to a 10% discount** off your annual BMW Motorrad Insurance premium. You can obtain an insurance quote online or by calling 0345 606 6127

10% discount** is available when taking out or when renewing an existing BMW Motorrad Insurance policy and will remain in place for the insured motorcycle until the policy is cancelled. 

Terms and Conditions

Rookie to Rider training and clothing offer*: £650 customer contribution required. This is an upfront cost which is not part of the vehicle hire/finance agreement. Offer comprises attendance at one of the official BMW Rider Training Centres and clothing of your choice at a participating BMW Motorrad retailer up to the value of RRP £915 (for G310R/G310GS) or RRP £1,455 (for the rest of the range included in the offer until 2nd April 2024).

Rider Training has five centres spread across the UK, including the main centre in Royston, Hertfordshire, with satellite schools in Darlington, Exeter, Edinburgh and Stoke-on-Trent. The required motorcycle theory test cost is not included.

Rookie to Rider offer is not available on CE 04, S 1000 R, S 1000 XR, S 1000 RR or M 1000 RR models. Retail customers only. Not to be used in conjunction with any other offer. No cash alternative available. Rookie to Rider training and clothing offer is conditional on you financing your motorcycle on a Personal Contract Hire or Personal Contract Purchase (Select) agreement with BMW Motorrad Financial Services.

 

Monthly rentals shown are for a 36-month BMW Personal Contract Hire agreement for the motorcycles listed above. Contract mileage is 5,000 miles per annum. Excess mileage charges range from 2.25p for the G 310 R to 8.50p per mile for the R nine T. Applies to new motorcycles ordered between 3rd January 2024 and 2nd April 2024 and registered by 30th April 2024  (subject to availability) at participating BMW Motorrad Retailers. At the end of your agreement you must return the motorcycle. Excess mileage, vehicle condition and other charges may be payable. Hire available subject to status to UK residents aged 18 or over.
