Tyre Pressure: Small Check, Big Impact

Maintaining the correct tyre pressure is essential for your safety and your vehicle’s performance.

Keeping your tyres at the recommended pressure offers multiple benefits:

  • Improved Safety – Better control and reduced risk of tyre failure

  • Lower Running Costs – Properly inflated tyres reduce fuel consumption

  • Extended Tyre Life – Even wear means fewer replacements

  • Reduced Emissions – Less fuel used means lower CO₂ output

To stay safe and efficient, check your tyre pressures at least once a month and always before a long journey.

Why Tread Depth Matters

Independent tyre surveys, including those by Continental and other leading manufacturers, suggest that road safety in the UK could be significantly improved if tyres were replaced at a tread depth of 3mm rather than the legal minimum of 1.6mm.

In wet conditions, this difference can be critical. Tests have shown that tyres with 3mm of tread can offer up to 50% better stopping performance compared to those at 1.6mm.

While deeper tread may seem better, extensive testing confirms that 3mm is the threshold where performance begins to decline noticeably. Replacing tyres at this depth helps ensure optimal grip, shorter braking distances, and safer driving—especially in challenging weather.

See the diagram for an illustration of a tyre's performance based on tread depth.

Tyre Safety Month

October is usually the wettest month of the year, so make sure your tyres are safe and ready.

During Tyre Safety Month in October, selected SEAT Retailers are offering a free, no obligation tyre check. Our trained technicians will ensure your tyres are safe and legal.

They’ll check:

  •  Tread depths

  • Air pressure

  • Overall tyre conditions including the spare wheel

tyres

The condition of your tyres is critical to road safety. Here are some tips to keep them in shape:

  • Inspect your tyres regularly for any cuts, bulges, uneven wear or objects embedded in the tread.

  • Check your tread depth is not below the legal minimum of 1.6mm. This is essential for your safety in all weather conditions.
