Design

How do you take a car as practical as the Defender 110 and make it even more usable inside? The answer is the Defender 130. It has a longer wheelbase than the standard 110, bringing even more interior space as a result. To ensure that everyone inside is as comfortable as possible, the 130 comes equipped with air suspension with adaptive dampers as standard, which not only makes the ride as compliant as possible but also ensures that the 130 can match the off-road capability of the rest of the Defender range. 

Like the rest of the Defender range, the 130 is built around a lightweight aluminium structure which isn’t only as light as can be, but supremely tough. It’s engineered to be able to deal with the worst conditions, yet it’s three times more rigid than traditionally-designed cars.

You’d actually be hard-pressed to tell the 130 apart from other Defenders in the range from most angles. It’s only from side-on that you can see the 130’s increased length, which has largely been added to the rear section of the car. However, it’s all wrapped up in the same adventure-inspired look as the ‘standard’ models.

The Defender 130 also gets an exclusive ‘Sedona Red’ colour, which can be contrasted nicely by Bright Silver finishers to give the car a really distinctive look. As with the rest of the Defender range, there are many alloy wheel designs to choose from too. 

Tech

You’ve got more than enough tech on board the Defender 130 to keep even the most avid of gadget lovers happy. The main screen will always be kept at its very sharpest courtesy of over-the-air updates, with constant improvements delivered entirely wirelessly - you don’t even need to visit the dealership to have them installed. 

The main Pivi Pro system is the most comprehensive that Land Rover has ever produced. It’s here that you’ll find all of your core media and navigation functions, relayed by a 10- or 11.4-inch display. It incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto so you can easily connect and mirror your smartphone, while the onboard Bluetooth can actually connect to two devices - so a passenger in the back can be in control of the music while your device handles navigation.

Engines & Performance

Land Rover has included a comprehensive range of engines with the new 130. The vast majority have the help of mild-hybrid technology, too, which helps to strengthen performance while also reducing both running costs and emissions. The P300 petrol is where the range kicks off, with this model delivering assured performance. The more powerful P400 adds a little extra kick to the Defender’s ‘regular’ petrol offerings. 

When it comes to diesel, you’ve got a great option. The D300 has the kind of rugged quality that you’d expect from a Defender, with this six-cylinder delivering a silky-smooth drive that is ideal for long-distance driving. There’s no plug-in hybrid available on the Defender 130, so this D300 diesel is the best option where fuel economy is concerned – returning a claimed 32.5mpg. It can also tow up to 3,500kg. 

Finally, we have the Defender 130 V8. Here, you’ll find a 5.0-litre supercharged engine underneath the bonnet, sending an impressive 493bhp to all four wheels. It’s also got a superb exhaust note, sent through quad pipes at the rear, and is able to accelerate from 0-60mph in 5.2 seconds.
