If you want a spacious SUV with coupe-like styling, things don’t get much better than the Audi Q3 Sportback. A terrific all-rounder in an increasingly popular class, the Q3 really stands out for all the right reasons. The fact it’s no less spacious than a regular Q3 is a testament to Audi’s commitment to making sure that buyers' favouring sleeker looks aren’t penalised in the practicality stakes.

Design

In days gone by, you had to choose style or practicality, but thanks to cars like the Audi Q3 Sportback, you’re able to have both, and truly have your cake and eat it. Based on the regular Q3 SUV, Audi has extended the length of this model, ensuring it offers very similar levels of space to the standard car and making it offer an appropriately spacious interior.

Design highlights include its full LED headlights, which can be upgraded to advanced Matrix LED units, capable of filtering the beam around other traffic without dazzling other road users, while the cabin benefits from an equally sophisticated design.

The Q3 Sportback is longer, lower and narrower than the regular Audi Q3, and as a result, offers a more dynamic appearance. The obvious visual difference in the design is the sloping coupe roof, while there’s an elegant shoulder line that’s lower than the standard car as well. It results in a particularly smart and eye-catching design that only builds on the Q3’s existing strengths.

There’s a great range of trim options on each Audi Q3 on sale too, each offering a slightly different look. If you want the most eye-catching design, though, the Black Edition is the way to go – this offers a gloss black styling kit and larger 20-inch alloy wheels, helping to give it a more muscular appearance.

Tech

Though the Q3 Sportback might be Audi’s most affordable coupe-SUV, there’s no shortage of technology on offer. It’s the in-car entertainment that is the real high point, with Audi’s excellent 10.1-inch HD touchscreen being a real highlight. Boasting Audi’s most advanced MMI navigation, it features a raft of connected services – not least a navigation overlayed with Google Earth images.

The Q3 Sportback’s driver assistance technology is also superb, with elements such as a 360-degree camera system helping to improve the day-to-day driving experience, and proving to be far more than just a gimmick. There’s also an optional Park Assist feature that helps with this further, while Adaptive Cruise Assist pieces together adaptive cruise control, traffic jam assist and active lane assist in one fantastic package.

Engines & Performance

Audi offers a great mix of engines on the Q3 Sportback, with three petrol units available alongside one diesels.

Starting with petrols, there are three options – the 35 TFSI, 40 TFSI and 45 TFSI. The 35 TFSI is the entry point to the range, and uses a 148bhp 1.5-litre turbocharged unit. This is also the only Q3 Sportback available with a manual gearbox, though an S tronic automatic transmission is also offered. The 40 TFSI and 45 TFSI meanwhile get a larger 2.0-litre unit and offer power outputs of 187bhp and 242bhp respectively. They also come with a quattro four-wheel-drive and an automatic gearbox as standard.

If you’d prefer a diesel, there is two available, the 148bhp 35 TDI and the 40 TDI. They both come paired with an automatic transmission as standard.

The more powerful 40 TFSI can reduce the 0-62mph time to 7.3 seconds*, with fuel economy figures of 34.4–33.6 mpg* given. The powerful 45 TFSI manages 0-62mph in a speedy 5.8 seconds*, with fuel efficiency figures of 31.7–31.0 mpg* given by Audi.

Drivers doing lots of miles may be better choosing a diesel, with the 35 TDI version able to manage a claimed 48.7–47.9 mpg*, while hitting 62mph in 9.3 seconds*.
