Design

Of course, it’s hard to talk about this new Defender without mentioning its iconic predecessor. That’s why Land Rover went full-bore in making this modern version just as capable and robust as the car it replaces, ensuring that this latest generation of Defender could still handle the rough stuff as easily as it does more around-town driving.

Underneath the Defender sits a rugged platform which has been designed to withstand the very harshest conditions and surfaces, while a maximum payload of 900kg and a towing capacity of up to 3,500kg means that the Defender is up to nearly any challenge.

Translating the look of the original into this new Land Rover Defender 3 door is no easy task, but Land Rover hasn’t done things by half. It’s got the same boxy dimensions as the famed classic, but these proportions have been brought into the modern age. The bluff, upright front end means that the Defender commands attention wherever it goes, while the short front and rear overhangs ensure that the 90 is just as commanding off-road.

You can take the Defender in a more traditional direction, too, with old-school colours and an iconic contrast white roof. In truth, with loads of colours and wheel choices, the Defender is ripe for personalisation.

Tech

There’s no lack of technology inside the Defender, that’s for sure. It uses Land Rover’s Pivi Pro infotainment system - relayed by screens of either 10- or 11.4-inches depending on the model - while the whole system has been made as clear as possible to it’s easy to use on the move. Defender 90 also benefits from Amazon’s Alexa voice recognition system integrated into it while over-the-air updates ensure that the technology is kept fully up to date without the need to always visit the workshop.

As with all Land Rover models, the Defender has also been equipped with loads of off-road tech. The 90 uses JLR’s Terrain Response 2 system to help it go here, there and everywhere while a full wade programme helps the Defender to forge large bodies of water.

Engines & Performance

The Defender 90 has been kitted out with a great range of engines so that there’s something for everyone. Diesel-wise, you’ve got the choice of the D250 and D300, which all use a smooth-running in-line six-cylinder engine. With these models, you’re getting great levels of refinement alongside some excellent efficiency that helps to make them true all-rounders. As there’s no plug-in hybrid available on the Defender 90 – you’ll need the 110 for that – the D250 is the most efficient, returning a claimed 33.8mpg.

There are also the P300 and P400 petrol versions, which take performance up a stage. They’re six-cylinders, too, but integrate mild-hybrid technology to help boost efficiency while making performance even smoother.

Finally, there’s the range-topping V8. For drivers who want the sportiest Defender possible this will be the go-to option as the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 engine under the bonnet provides deep wells of performance and torque. If you want out-and-out performance this is the model to choose, as it can go from 0-60mph in a staggering 4.9 seconds and head on to a top speed of 149mph.

It goes without saying that all Defender models for sale use a four-wheel-drive system to help maintain excellent traction in all conditions and on even the slipperiest of surfaces.
