The new BMW i3 50 xDrive First Edition marks an exciting new chapter for BMW, combining advanced electric technology, impressive performance and a bold new design. In the latest episode of SytnerTV, Matt gets up close with the new BMW i3, showcasing its key features and sharing his first impressions of BMW’s latest electric Saloon.
The new BMW i3 is very different from the original i3 that first introduced BMW’s electric technology to the market. According to Matt, the two models demonstrate just how far BMW’s electric vehicle technology has developed, with the latest i3 bringing together the brand’s sixth-generation eDrive technology and Neue Klasse design philosophy.
New BMW i3: impressive electric range
One of the headline features of the BMW i3 50 xDrive is its claimed WLTP range of up to 563 miles. Matt highlights the figure as an example of the significant advances in battery technology, making the new BMW i3 particularly interesting for drivers looking for a long-range electric car.
The i3 50 xDrive also delivers up to 469 hp and uses an 800-volt electrical architecture, supporting charging at rates of up to 400 kW.
A new direction for BMW design
The new BMW i3 design takes strong inspiration from BMW’s Neue Klasse models, giving the electric Saloon a distinctive appearance. Matt thinks the new design is a major departure from the previous-generation 3 Series, with sharper detailing and more contemporary proportions.
During his walkaround, Matt highlights the illuminated kidney grille, angular front end and arrow-shaped LED headlights. He also thinks there are subtle visual references to the BMW i8 from certain angles, creating an interesting link between BMW’s past and its latest generation of electric vehicles.
Moving towards the rear, the new BMW i3 features distinctive wraparound LED lights and a more squared-off design. The familiar BMW Hofmeister kink also remains, providing a connection to the brand’s established design language.
Inside the new BMW i3
The BMW i3 interior continues the Neue Klasse design theme, combining a minimalist layout with the latest BMW technology. Matt showcases the new four-spoke steering wheel, BMW Operating System 10 and wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto.
One of the features Matt is particularly impressed by is BMW Panoramic Vision. The large, high-resolution display stretches across the dashboard and sits within the driver’s eyeline, providing key information without requiring the driver to look away from the road for long.
The cabin also features ambient lighting, wireless smartphone charging, comfortable seats and a panoramic sunroof. Matt thinks the white and grey interior of the First Edition model complements its blue exterior particularly well.
Practical electric performance
While the new BMW i3 focuses heavily on performance and technology, it has also been designed with everyday usability in mind. The Saloon offers between 420 and 520 litres of boot space, while a 58-litre front storage compartment provides additional room.
This combination of electric range, performance and practicality makes the new BMW i3 an interesting addition to BMW’s growing electric vehicle range.
The new BMW i3 brings together a long claimed electric range, powerful performance, advanced charging technology and a completely new approach to BMW design.
